So I've been using deodorant ever since the third grade, but recently (as of March 6th, 2022), I have stopped using any store-bought deodorants (including the aluminum-free ones), and this includes the Tom's "Natural" deodorant.
The reason? Because they have chemicals which I would prefer not to put on me. Now I'm pretty sure everyone has known about how aluminum-based deodorants are toxic, and although that's one of the reasons I don't use it, another reason was because if I wore light-colored shirts, when I would sweat, the aluminum would leave this weird yellow stain, so I used aluminum free ones for a while, but then I made a discovery.
I had discovered that one of the main ingredients were propylene glycol, which in case you didn't know, is the main ingredient in anti-freeze. There are some variations on this ingredient, such as dipropylene glycol and glycol, which is just the short name for ethylene glycol. All of those ingredients I just listed are also commonly used in anti-freeze (it depends on the brand you get.)
When dealing with anti-freeze, the warning label says to avoid skin contact with the anti-freeze. I'm pretty sure that includes our armpits.
So I've avoided store-bought deodorant. That's great, but I don't want to smell either. What's the alternative?
Here's how to make deodorant at home with a few simple ingredients:
1/3 cup coconut oil (this is really good for your skin)
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup arrowroot (or corn) starch
5-10 drops teatree essential oil (anti-microbial properties)
10 drops lavender essential oil (smells good)
10 drops rose essential oil (also smells good)
You just mix those together and boom, deodorant that doesn't have stuff that you obviously shouldn't put on your skin.
